Shades of Green

The terms "green" or "going green" are used to describe building products and practices that reduce a negative impact or make a positive impact on the environment. These products or practices would be considered sustainable in their nature. Understanding sustainability helps us to make choices in our product selection that meet the needs of the client without compromising the needs of future generations. There are basic components to "going green" that we utilize in varying degrees depending on the client, building department, site, & design. Some of the components integrate the use of sound construction practices & others relate to products utilized in the building. If everyone integrated these components into their home, just one product or practice, they could reduce their environmental footprint and increase their quality of life. Our motto is "There are many shades of green" and we love to work with clients to develop their unique shade, from light to dark. We also strive to be aware of the production practices of our suppliers to insure that the product is eco-friendly in its development. Our goal is to make it easy for you to build green.
1) Sustainable Materials: Products that help conserve our natural resources and have a long lifecycle: renewable products, recycled products, sustainable and/or certified products that tend to be more durable, lower maintenance, & have a longer life. Products may include metal roofs, fiber cement siding, engineered lumber, composite decking, recycled glass or paper based (pulp from certified forests) countertops, bamboo flooring, and reclaimed lumber for flooring & trim.
2) Waste Reduction: On site recycling of waste and minimizing the production of waste. This could include the repurposing or reutilizing of materials removed from existing buildings and/or the integration of recycled products into new construction. We also consider companies who use waste reduction practices in manufacturing in this category.
3) Indoor Air Quality: Encompassing the environment of the home to reduce mold and toxins in the air. Products or practices include formaldehyde-free insulation, low-VOC paints & adhesives, adequate ventilation, paperless drywall, and proper caulking & sealing.
4) Energy Efficiency: Addressing the performance of the home: high efficiency HVAC systems, tankless water heaters, energy saving lighting (CFL’s and LED’s), Energy Star appliances, high "R Value" insulation, solar systems or components, living roofs, building positioning, Low "E" glass, and attention to sealing the structure. Our building experts at www.eco-homes.com specialize in improving energy efficiency & operating costs for existing and new buildings.
